Neural competition between concurrent speech production and other speech perception

چکیده
Understanding others’ speech while individuals simultaneously produce utterances implies neural competition and requires specific mechanisms for a resolution given that previous studies proposed opposing signal dynamics both processes in the auditory cortex (AC). We here used neuroimaging humans to investigate this by lateralized stimulations with other samples ipsilateral or contralateral feedback of actively produced self form various vowels. In experiment 1, we show, first, classifications during active lead activity planum temporale (PTe) when were presented together only left right ear. The PTe also seemed indifferently respond single samples. Second, anterior superior temporal (STC) was found dichotic (i.e. separate ears). Unlike studies, STC supported rather than processing. Furthermore, mid more involved These results signify processing beyond general PTe. Third, recognition context listening recorded 2 led largely symmetric additionally inferior frontal subregions. latter previously reported be generally relevant perception classification, but classification challenged not Altogether, unlike formerly established brain networks uncompetitive perception, seemingly leads reordering, functional reassignment, unusual lateralization AC activations.

متن کاملThe synergy between speech production and perception.
Speech intelligibility is known to be relatively unaffected by certain deformations of the acoustic spectrum. These include translations, stretching or contracting dilations, and shearing of the spectrum (represented along the logarithmic frequency axis). It is argued here that such robustness reflects a synergy between vocal production and auditory perception. Thus, on the one hand, it is show...
متن کاملSpeech perception and production.
Until recently, research in speech perception and speech production has largely focused on the search for psychological and phonetic evidence of discrete, abstract, context-free symbolic units corresponding to phonological segments or phonemes. Despite this common conceptual goal and intimately related objects of study, however, research in these two domains of speech communication has progress...
متن کاملSpeech Perception and Production by a Self-organizing Neural Network
Considerations of the real-time self-organization of neural networks for speech recognition and production have lead to a new understanding of several key issues in such networks, most notably a definition of new processing units and functions of hierarchical levels in the auditory system. An important function of a particular neural level in the auditory system is to provide a partially-compre...
متن کاملAsymmetries between Speech Perception and Production Reveal Phonological Structure
It has been observed that in production, the boundary between the vowels /i/ and /e/ is diagonal, i.e. it involves both F1 and F2; in perception, by contrast, the boundary has been observed to be horizontal, i.e. listeners do not use F2 as a cue for distinguishing the two vowels. The same is true of the /u–o/ boundary. With computer simulations of virtual language learners we show that this per...
